Symptom

You cannot access your e-mail inbox from your Android device. The login name (email address) and password are correct. However, you have named your mail account in the webspace control panel with one or more uppercase letters.

Cause

Most e-mail programs are case-insensitive to login names. However, some Android mail apps cannot handle this and only work properly if the login name, i.e. the email address, is lowercase on the server.

Solution

Rename your mailbox on the server, so that it is all spelled in lowercase letters.

A direct renaming of the mailbox on the server is not possible because for the server, as well as for numerous e-mail programs, different upper and lower case letters are seen as the same e-mail address. You can still rename an existing mailbox via a small detour:

1. Create a backup of the mailbox. Errors can occur when renaming mailboxes, especially if the mailbox is accessed during the brief phase of the name change. You could lose all emails and attachments in the mailbox. You should therefore only continue after you have backed up all emails and attachments in your mailbox.

2. Rename the mailbox to any new name. The name must be different from the existing name. You can use almost any name, e.g. "temporary@".

3. Now rename the mailbox back to its old name. This time, however, write the e-mail address in lower case.
