Symptom

After your FTP program connected to your server successfully, the server responds „ECONNRESET - Connection reset by peer“ before your FTP program logs in. Immediately afterwards your ftp program retries the connection, and this time it works.

Cause

Hacker operate scripts that create a high cpu load on a host and block many processes by simply creating a huge number of FTP connections. A login is not tested. The sole purpose of the attack is to bind as many resources of the host as possible, to bring down the host. Therefor our systems disconnect all ftp connections that do not transmit a login name and a password immediately after a connection has been established.

Your ftp software may need a bit longer after a first connection to transmit login creditials. For that reason, the ftp server disconnects the connection, before the software logs in.

Solution

After the first unsuccessful login attempt your ftp program will try another one. On this second try it can transmit the login credentials faster, because it doesn’t have anything else to do at that time. The login will succeed on this second attempt. The whole process is a matter of only a second, so that you will hardly recognize the duplicate connection attempt.
