Symptom

When you create a Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate, you see an error message similar to this:

Invalid response from https://acme-v01.api.letsencrypt.org/acme/new-cert.
Details:
Type: urn:acme:error:rateLimited
Status: 429
Detail: Error creating new cert :: too many certificates already issued for exact set of domains: : see https://letsencrypt.org/docs/rate-limits/

Cause

You have tried to create a certificate more than 20 times. Previous attempts failed, but you did not resolve the cause of the failure. A maximum of 20 certificate creation attempts per week can be made at Let's Encrypt.

Solution

Fix the reason why a certificate could not be created. Possible causes of failed attempts are usually that a domain is new and not yet accessible on the Internet, that it does not point to the correct IP address of the webspace, or that a persistent redirect is configured in your web space that prevents Let's Encrypt from reading the token used to validate domain membership to the web space.

After fixing the cause of previous failed attempts, wait one week, then try again.
